Product Description
In the 13th century hierarchical city, Kagutsuchi, the Librarium regulates the amazing power of "Armagus", a fusion of magic and technology. Currently they are after a wanted criminal named Ragna The Bloodedge, also known as "Death", who wants to destroy the Librarium. Due to Ragna possessing a powerful form of Armagus known as the Azure Grimoire, people far and wide are after not only his bounty, but his grimoire as well. This is where the story begins! This is a fighting game in which players control one of several 13th century characters from the City of Katugsuchi in one-on-one fight matches. Players punch, kick, and use special attacks against opponents until the other character's health meter is depleted. Each character has individualized special attacks, including sword swipes, gunfire, magic, and electrocution. This Limited Edition features a two-disc soundtrack with 48 tracks by Guilty Gear's Daisuke Ishiwatari, limited edition packaging, and a bonus video disc. Good while supplies last!

5 out of 5 stars The fighter you've always been waiting for.   July 27, 2010
Mohammed Isa Almahmeed
Difficulty Just Right
Time Spent 40 to 100 Hours
The Bottom Line Highly addictive

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is a fighter by the makers of Guilty Gear. A fighting series known for it's fast paced action and strange pack of characters to use. BlazBlue is no different, however the gameplay, the characters, is a lot different from what you're used to in Guilty Gear.

First thing's first is the fact that there's only 12 characters to chose from. While this may seem very little, the fact that they're pretty varied makes it a pretty good selection to chose from. The only badside is after playing through with em all, you kinda wish there were more. While I did say they were varied, you can only had hoped they included even more variety of fighters. From characters like Ragna, to Jin, to catlike creature Taokaka, mystery cyborg ninja like Hakumen and even a blob made out of bugs Akarune. You won't be disappointed by the different fighting styles they offer. The gameplay is rather simple, the main attacks are mapped out on 4 buttons, starting from the Square button and working clockwise, you've got Weak, Medium, Strong and Drive attacks. The first three are self explanatory while the Drive attacks are unique to each character. Think of it similar to Super Smash Bros. B attacks, each character has their own attack that they bring to the battle, Litchi Faye-Ling can throw her pole and control it in various directions by calling it and placing it on the ground, make it spin in different directions and even bring it to life to beat your opponents. While others like Ragna have the ability to drain your life to heal his own thanks to his sword. Jin has the ability to freeze his opponents instantly, making it possible to constantly do combos without letting the opponent off. Each drive attack is different for each character and it's best to test them all out and see how they help you with your fights.

In terms of story, BlazBlue offers a rather excellent one, especially for a fighter which is rather surprising. Story mode plays like a visual novel where making certain choices lead to different consequences and paths, making it so multiple playthroughs of each character's story essential in getting 100% for them (though it's not required to ever do so). As you play through story mode you'll see how each character ties together, the true ending and the overall understand the basic foundation of the story a lot better, which will obviously be further explored in Continuum Shift. Not only does this shed a lot of light about mysterious characters like Hakumen and Nu, but it lets you easily practice each character, it's a good way to warm up for Arcade Mode or see which character suits your play style best. A bonus of the story includes a "Teach Me Miss Litchi" episodic series, which explains some of the concepts of BlazBlue that might seem hard to understand in a comedic fashion and art style.

Online play is extremely solid, with a lobby system, a ranked match system and much more. BlazBlue does well in those areas by offering the ability to save replays, watch other fights and easily find friends without much of a hassle. The only issue is...connectivity. At times the servers don't seem to respond well with connections, connecting to games might cause a timeout and often searching give you the same results over and over again. Another thing is that people often tend to think the lag in the opening when a battle starts stays that way, however this is untrue, give it a moment and the battle will sync up fine and battles tend to be lag free, having faced people in places like Australia while I live in Canada and having a relatively lag free battle is really good in my opinion. Lastly, the online mode features the ability to adjust rules, limitations to skill level and whether people have mics or not, it's rather customizable to a large degree and makes it accessible for anyone. Ranked matches simply pairs you up with anyone with a strict set of rules and the lack of a lobby system. It makes ranked matches fast and easy, but sometimes not exactly fun when you're constantly being matched with the same person.

Overall BlazBlue is an excellent fighter worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Best Fighting Game Ever Made, Meow!   June 20, 2010

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is the deepest, quickest, combo-heavy fighting game I have ever played. Each of the twelve characters play COMPLETELY different, and you really have to practice your characters' basics and combos to stand a chance online. The online portion of the game has the smoothest connection for a fighting game I have ever experienced. No lag here! The story mode is great, and getting 100% completion for each character is a challenge that will take you quite a while to complete. The gallery mode is comprised of around one hundred images of high def anime styled art that you unlock by completing various tasks in the other modes of BlazBlue. The limited edition comes with a Blu-ray of every characters' basic combos, and a soundtrack. You will want the soundtrack because BB has one of the best hard rocking/classical soundtracks ever committed to disc.
This is one of the most complete packages in gaming, and well worth your time if you're a fan of fighters, and it will keep you busy for as long as you want it to, as there are always new combos to discover, and other fighters to challenge you online.

BlazBlue, the spiritual successor to Guilty Gear. Developed by Arc Systemworks, music composed by Daisuke Ishiwatari, original creator of Guilty Gear!

PROS:
Comes with two disc official sound track
DVD containing basic info on Bread and Butter Combos for all 12 characters
HD 2D animation is gorgeous! Can't say this enough, the 2D characters with a 3D background is eye candy. The animation for for Distortion Drives are well drawn. Online mode is superb. The netcode is quite impressive. It offers replays of top players with a rank of 1500 or higher for all characters to download and watch. Playing several hundred matches, even with lag, matches don't disconnect unless your ISP service just drops. Each room supports up to six players, so you can go vs. against several friends or co-workers.

CONS:
Small roster of characters, just 12

Even though the roster isn't that big, each character is unique with their own play style and Drive. No character is a clone of another which adds variety to the cast. I bought this Limited Edition a few months back, and never regretted it once. Best Fighter and new Fighter IP of 2009. Recommend this to anyone who loves 2D fighters or grew up playing them in the arcades.

5 out of 5 stars 2D is still good.   December 10, 2009

There are those who said that the automobile would make trains and horses obsolete. There are also people who said that 3D made 2D games obsolete.

Both groups were wrong, and in this game we have a prime example of just how wrong they are. Fighting games could be said to have both come a long way since street fighter 2, and not changed at all. The truth is that while the fundimentals have not changed, the level of refinement has risen to an art form. Guilty Gear proved the market (and has become the benchmark) for extremly deep 2D fighting games, but it has become so deep and involved that new players drown in the same depth that makes the series so good.

BlazBlue is by the same design team as Guilty Gear, and they took serius time and effort to bridge that gap between the vetrans and the new players. placing the non standard abilitys of charicters on a single button rather then complex imputs makes it easyer to learn and pull off truely impressive things. The use of one touch special moves (a limited selection that on most charicters are moves you will be using a lot) mapped to the right analog stick opens most of each charicters playbook to everyone. Of course, having a million tools does no good if you dont know how and when to use them, so a vetran still holds the edge, but the gap is not the unbridgable abyss that it was in Guilty Gear's more modern decendents. on top of this is the impressively done story that requires you to play though each charicter and the final ending to really understand, and is compelling enough to warrent the time and effort involved.

Visually, I hope you have a large high definition TV or monitor to play this on, because the artwork and animations are hand drawn frame by frame poetry. The backrounds are filled with life and small details, and even the simple still images used to fill most of the story mode events are clearly the work of skilled artists. The few peices of animated cutscenes are drawn in a style consistant with the game itself, and their sparing use was a wise move, because the ones that do occour hold that much more impact.

Guilty Gear is known for its music, most of it done by the same artist, and all of it top quality material. I bought the limited edition, which came with the soundtrack, saving me from having to buy that seprately (the music is that good.)
